Drabble by Daniela

“Thanks for listening to Kane at 92.9! See you in the morning!” She smiled and the red light flicked off. Flora sighed and looked at the phone next to her. She frowned… No call....

************************************

He didn’t do it. He couldn’t have possibly done it. I mean why reason would he have? None. There was no specific reason for offering her dinner. He scowled to himself and shoved hands into his pockets and groaned. He just got his jeans greasy. He shook his head and kept walking passed the apartments. He had no right to ask to her dinner. No right! None…. But why did it seem like that reason always came up in all of his excuses. For example,” I had no time-“ “It wasn’t nice to ask to you do something without any reason-“ “I regretted asking you because I had no ideas for-“

Well… you get the point… His reasons always seemed to include the terms nothing, none, or not having. Daniel stopped in front of a large looking apartment building and sighed. Long way up… Daniel sat on a bench by the steps and let the wind wash over his face. He shouldn’t have offered her dinner all those weeks ago. He hated her. He hated her with a passion. It was all her fault. All his stumbling over words, and tripping over emotions and such. None of it was actually his fault. None of it was actually his ideas. Dinner… she had asked for that… well sort of. He sighed for the uptenth time that night and stared out at the street. The leaves dancing around the curb and he couldn’t help but smile a bit.

It was like her hair, swirling freely around her face. His eyes widened and he instinctively growled to himself. Everyday. Everyday, he listens to her voice on the radio. And for what reason? HE HAD NO REASON! He just couldn’t understand it. Daniel got up and began walking away from the stairs. Nothing was going to happen anyways…

“You never called Daniel…”
He stiffened and turned. Her black coat was wrapped around her tightly and she looked a little disappointed at him. His eyes narrowed.

“What exactly were you expecting? Me to do a back flip, and send you truckloads of roses?”

“Not particularly.” She replied looking away and wrapping her arms around her shoulders. His eyes softened.

“I’m sorry, I just…” he trailed off softly.

“Its okay,” she smiled sadly,” I wasn’t expecting anything extravagant. You were just returning a favor after all.”

Daniel shook his head and approached her and she looked up at him hopefully.

“Well… I would like to say thanks for… helping me out.” He whispered as if he was ashamed. Flora giggled disappointed and nodded.

“It was nothing. Well, its getting late. I better see you later.” She said smiling lightly walking up the stairs.

Daniel hated her even more as she walked up the steps slowly. How could she do that. After acting like she cared weeks before, just dismiss him like that. He loathed her, and he glared daggers and arrows and many medieval torturing devices at her head as it bobbed around searching for keys.

Saying she loved him and such. Then he stopped glaring at looked at her as if he cared himself. Maybe he did. He shook himself and then began the long walk back to his apartment.

N ext morning....

Flora groaned. The phone was ringing. At five in the morning. Why at FIVE IN THE MORNING! She shuffled groggily through the room and then the phone stopped ringing and she sighed. Great. She stumbled back and tripped into her bed post stubbing her toe. She hissed and jumped back into the bed and the message machine started up. The voice was familiar and her head perked up from the pillows.

“Hey Flora… Its Daniel. I just wanted to tell you… That… That…"

Flora jumped out of bed and picked up the phone.

“Hello!” she gasped and she heard Daniel inhale sharply.

“Flora?”

“Yeah, Its me.” She responded smiling,” What is it?”

“I wanted to say thanks again for helping me out, I know I was very rude and I wanted to apologize…”

She sighed and nodded numbly before replying.

“Oh its alright…Well, I have to go. It’s kinda early and I need to leave for work in about an hour…”

“I understand. I’m sorry for calling so early. Bye.” Flora hung up and crawled back into bed feeling her heart twist in her chest. Before she heard the phone ring again. She ignored it and settled back into the comforter. The message machine went off again and she barely tuned in.

“By the way Flora... I love you…”

Flora smiled and then drifted off into sleep and the line went dead.
